What Is Mineral Makeup?

Since ancient times humans have used minerals to decorate their faces and bodies. Take the Egyptians and their kohl eyeliner for example, not as pure as mineral eyeliners today as it was lead based but it was a very important part of their daily routine.

Mineral makeup began its commercial climb in the 1970's with Bare Escentuals and then Jane Iredale followed in the 1990's and the rest is history so to speak.

It’s ever rising popularity is due to the fact that more and more people have become increasingly aware of the harmful unnatural ingredients in regular makeup and want something much more pure and healthy for their skin. High quality pure mineral makeup is formulated using only natural minerals which undergo many different processes to purify them so that they comply with the strict regulatory criteria for use in cosmetics.

The huge rise in sales of mineral makeup has unfortunately also been accompanied by a huge rise in the price. What most people don't realise is that they can actually make their own mineral cosmetics, just as pure if not purer than anything you can buy in the shops but at a fraction of the cost, yes it's true!

The base ingredients used are soft white powders and these form the bases for foundations, bronzers, blushers, concealers, correctors, mineral veils, eyeshadows and body dusts . The colour is then added to these base powders in the form of iron oxides, coloured micas or in some cases dyes, to create each individual product. The list doesn't end there either, with different base ingredients, mascaras, lipsticks and eyeliners can also be formulated and again with the addition of iron oxides or coloured micas a vast array of shades can be created.

You are here reading about mineral makeup possibly because you have read controversial articles about regular makeup and have decided that you want to make a change to something more natural and better for your skin, not to mention your purse. Maybe you just feel the desire to be creative and want to make beautiful gifts for family, friends and yourself of course.

Either way, it is a great choice and I suspect you will never look back - so Happy Formulating!
